Gas Chamber and Crematoria, Auschwitz I, Poland. In September 1941, the SS conducted poison gas tests, killing 850 Poles and Russians using cyanide. The substance trade name was Zyklon B and was originally used as a pesticide; the tests were deemed successful. The furnaces in the crematoria could burn up to 350 bodies daily.
